Starting clear aligners? Build these habits from day one

Clear aligners fit neatly into many people’s routines. You can remove them to eat, brush and floss—but that flexibility comes with a responsibility: wearing them consistently.

A few habits can make treatment easier to manage.

Plan your day around your wear time

Most aligner treatment requires around 20–22 hours of wear each day, depending on your orthodontist’s instructions. Meals, snacks and cleaning all count towards the time they are out.

Try to make putting your aligners back in part of your mealtime routine. Leaving them on the kitchen bench until bedtime can quickly turn a short break into several hours.

Follow your prescribed change schedule

Moving to the next aligner early does not necessarily make treatment faster. Each stage is designed to work as part of a sequence, and your teeth need time to respond.

Follow the schedule you have been given. If you have missed substantial wear time, ask your orthodontic team what to do before progressing.

Understand the little extras

Your treatment may include small tooth-coloured attachments or elastics. Attachments help the aligners apply forces to particular teeth, while elastics may help correct the way the upper and lower teeth meet.

These details are part of your treatment plan, even if they were not what you initially pictured when you thought of clear aligners.

Speak up if the fit changes

If an aligner stops seating properly, an attachment comes off, or something feels wrong, contact the practice. Your orthodontist may need to check the fit or adjust the plan.

At Adelaide Orthodontics, we encourage you to ask questions throughout treatment. Understanding your aligners makes it easier to use them confidently.
